'Soonah' is a wooden, racing dayboat of the Loch Long One Design class, and is sail no. 47. She was built in 1959 by Alexander Robertson & Co. of Sandbank, on the southern shore of the Holy Loch. Robertson built boats to a very high standard, and 'Soonah' is no exception, with a beautiful varnished mahogany hull. The current owner bought her in Scotland in 1990 and brought her down to Aldeburgh, where she is now. He had been trained at the International Boatbuilding Training College (IBTC) in Lowestoft, and has done a considerable amount of work on her. She has a laid deck which has been carefully glued to a gaboon ply sub-deck. He also re-made the cuddy in mahogany as well as the coamings, which include a lovely curve at the back of the cockpit. The cockpit sole is in the form of a teak grate to allow free-draining. Coaming crew-seats have been added to create more comfort for the crew!
'Soonah' is very simply rigged, but nevertheless has been one of the faster boats when racing on the River Alde. In recent years she has been dry-stored in a local barn. She needs to be rubbed down and new paint, varnish and anti-foul applied, as well as the planking splines checked.
'Soonah' has her own galvanised twin-axle trailer, complete with spare wheel and light-board, as well as a good suit of sails.
